Double-digit growth in markets worldwide
The global markets for electronic components and assemblies are experiencing strong growth. After a challenging 2023, the latest figures from the ZVEI show a clear recovery for 2024 and 2025: double-digit sales growth is expected worldwide.
For 2025, the ZVEI anticipates a global turnover of 900 billion US dollars for electronic components and 1.44 trillion US dollars for assemblies, the next level up in the value chain. This is the conclusion reached by Clemens Otte, Head of Microelectronics and Cables at ZVEI, during this year's Productronica kick-off press conference.
China, Asia/Pacific and the Americas are driving the momentum with double-digit growth rates. Europe is recovering after last year's decline in sales, but remains behind the global leaders with expected single-digit growth of 3.4% for 2025. Japan, on the other hand, is stagnating: The ZVEI is forecasting zero growth for the market there, as no relevant sales drivers are discernible.
Market development is increasingly determined by semiconductor components, which now account for around 80% of the total market. Overall, the ZVEI estimates that sales of semiconductor components will reach 728 billion US dollars (651 billion euros) in 2025. The European share is seven percent or 56 billion euros. 14.5 billion euros of this comes from Germany. This dominance underlines the central role of the semiconductor industry for electronics production as a whole. Incoming orders in the electrical and electronics industry are also picking up slightly, which indicates stable demand and a willingness to invest.
"The current figures show how strongly the electronics industry is benefiting from global trends such as automation, digitalization, AI and renewable energies," explains Clemens Otte. "The semiconductor industry in particular remains the key driver of innovation and growth." Nevertheless, politicians must keep an eye on the entire microelectronics ecosystem and provide sufficient funding. Clemens Otte: "We need local capacities in Germany and Europe along the entire value chain. In addition to component production, this means above all in electronics production and printed circuit boards."
