The 'Sivacon 8MF1' control cabinet series from Siemens subsidiary Alpha Verteilertechnik is made from 100% scrap from European suppliers with wind power. With this step, Siemens is pursuing its sustainability goals in the areas of decarbonization and resource efficiency, which are defined in the DEGREE framework.

In the manufacturing process for the control cabinets,CO2 emissions are 70% lower than for conventional steel, which is usually produced in a blast furnace using iron ore and coal. This reduction translates into a saving of 308 kg ofCO2 per cabinet unit. Steel production is currently responsible for 8% of global emissions. As demand for steel continues to rise, it is crucial to decarbonize production, according to the Group.

The new variant has the same technical characteristics and functionalities as cabinets made from conventional steel. This enables larger industrial customers to reduce theirCO2 emissions and get closer to their sustainability goals.

The DEGREE framework

The DEGREE framework is part of Siemens' long-term strategy to take a leading role in sustainable development and actively address both environmental and social challenges. It is intended to ensure that the company is not only economically successful, but also makes a positive contribution to the environment and society. DEGREE is an acronym for six pillars:

  • Decarbonization: Siemens aims to reduceCO2 emissions and become carbon neutral by 2030.
  • Ethics : The company values ethical behavior in all business areas and aims to set high standards in the areas of compliance and transparency.
  • Governance stands for responsible and transparent corporate management aimed at ensuring sustainability and long-term value creation.
  • Resource Efficiency: The focus is on the efficient use of resources and reducing the ecological footprint in order to conserve natural resources.
  • Equity: The Group aims to promote diversity, equality and inclusion within the company and in society.
  • Employability: The development of employees' skills and competencies should be promoted in order to ensure the employability and well-being of the workforce.
