The tire manufacturer and automotive supplier Continental put the first driverless car on the test track 50 years ago. The aim at the time was to test the tires and obtain reproducible results.

The electromechanical throttle control was located in the engine compartment, with which the throttle could be controlled automatically and the desired driving speed could be determined from the control station by modulating the current in the guide wire with an audio frequency.
