3D sensors
Reflective and matt surfaces
Fraunhofer IOSB has developed an inline-capable 3D sensor based on the chromatic confocal principle for microscopic measurement of the topography of surfaces.
According to the Fraunhofer Institute, chromatic evaluation based on human color perception has made it possible to achieve the same sensitivity in this application with just a few "color" channels as the widely used spectrometer approach. This makes it possible to realize a very compact sensor. This results in new degrees of freedom that can be used in the application for an increased measurement speed, a compact design or an increased dynamic range of the measurement. A high dynamic range is advantageous when measuring dark laser weld seams on shiny stainless steel surfaces. The 3D sensor is generally suitable for measuring the topography of reflective and diffusely reflective surfaces. Other possible applications include the measurement of connector contacts, the inspection of solder balls on wafers or the measurement of chrome-plated components in the automotive sector.
